A letter to Paul Ryan (sent via email)

I am concerned about corruption in the current presidential administration. I am particularly concerned by your office's neglect of President Trump's many conflicts of interest. It is very important that any President renounce all financial dealings that give the appearance of conflict of interest. But this President has actual conflicts of interest, and is directly benefiting from the office he holds.

Despite Trump's promise to the American people that there would be "no new deals" in the Trump brand, the Trump presence in the US is increasing rapidly, and the DC hotel is encouraging diplomats and others seeking access to the president to make use of the hotel. Meanwhile, the President is selling access to himself and his family with increasing membership fees and tickets sold to the NYE party at Mar-a-Lago. HIs children, who are acting as Trump's "blind trust," are also deeply involved in his administration -- yet another blurring between family, business, and government.

Donald Trump should release his tax returns and sever himself from his business. Otherwise, he will be in violation of the US Constitution's emoluments clause, and he will confront law suits and speculation over the intersection between his business and his office at every turn. More importantly, he will neither warrant nor deserve the trust of you or the American people.

So far, you have neither condemned the President's actions, nor have you publicly encouraged him to address these problems. I remember years ago, how I admired you when you said you wanted to tuck your children in at night more than you wanted to serve as Speaker of the House. You are a powerful voice in the American public and a respected voice in your party. You have a reputation for upholding American principles, including the US Constitution. Your silence on these issues is part of what allows them to continue. And if you continue to be silent, you will be remembered for your silence. Thank you for your time.
